What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo as we know it today is a Korean martial art created in the 1940s and 50s by several prominent Korean martial artists who had backgrounds in Japanese Karate (due to the Japanese occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945), and some influence from neighbouring Chinese martial arts. Taekwondo is similar in many ways to Karate, but emphasizes a wider arsenal of kicks and agile movements. There are 2 major organizations within Taekwondo - the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF), and World Taekwondo (WT). They both practice similar techniques, but differ in competition rules and have different sets of formal training exercises called “poomsae” (known as patterns or forms in English). This school mainly follows the World Taekwondo curriculum which is administered by Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters) in Seoul, South Korea. World Taekwondo is also the organization affiliated with the Olympics for sport Taekwondo competitions.
